In drear November's fog and snow,
Should prize the topaz's amber hue,
Emblem of friends and lovers true.
The name Topaz is derived from an ancient Greek name for St John’s Island in the Red Sea from where a yellow stone was mined. It is now believed this stone was Chrysolite and not what we know today as Topaz however, the name stuck. Topaz is a silicate mineral and comes in a vast array of beautiful colours due to various ‘impurities’ in the stones including blue, pale green, yellow, pink, red, brown and even black whilst ‘pure’ Topaz is a clear stone.
Topaz signifies loyalty, faithfulness, friendship and strength whilst being renowned for releasing tension and balancing emotions. In the Middle Ages, Topaz was worn by Royalty and clergy and used as a medicine to prevent asthma and insomnia and was believed to guard against sudden death. Immersed in wine for three days and nights, the resultant liquid was thought to be a cure for weak vision.
